National Association of Bulk Drug Manufacturers Association (India) representing the Bulk Drug Manufacturers was established tweny five years back and played a pivotal role in promoting bulk drug industry and in particular making the erstwhile AP state as the Drug capital of India.

BDMA in association with Pharmexcil and Principal sponsorship of Department Of Pharmaceuticals, Govt. of India and Government of Telangana  organized a National seminar  “Bulk Drug and Pharma Industry – Industrial Infrastructure for Sustainable Growth“ at Hyderabad on 21st April, 2017. Key note address was delivered by Dr V M Katoch, Former Secretary, Department of Health Research, Ministry of Health and Family Research and Director General, Indian Council of Medical Research on need for the development of Industrial infrastructure for growth of Bulk drug industry in the country and reduce our dependence on imports in particular from China.

The Government of India has been talking of a cluster development for the pharmaceutical industry for some time now, to make it more competitive and self-sufficient. The Department of Pharmaceuticals under the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers has plans to promote dedicated Pharma Parks with integrated infrastructure such as captive power generation, CETP, solid waste disposal and landfill, road-rail-air connectivity - to encourage existing and new companies from within and outside India to invest and promote the manufacturing of APIs in the country in a significant way.

With Pharma industry committed to environmental protection, there is need for flexibility in environmental laws with respect to products changeover and capacity enhancement within the approved pollution loads. There is need for centralized environmental infrastructure in industrial clusters to make the pollution treatment more effective and cost competitive. During the last decade, Indian API manufacturers lost the competitive edge to countries like China, primarily due to:

  1. Costly power,
  2. Inadequate infrastructure,

3.Government restrictions on the volume of APIs produced in the existing plants,

4.Lack of financial support   and   Incentives from the government, to match the Chinese govt. subsidization of exports.

  1. Delays in new drug approvals.

With support and initiatives from Government of India and  the States, India is poised to become a global leader in APIs and become a Global Pharma Hub.
