South Scope Style Awards Presentation

The MBS Southscope Style Awards held on 25 October 2009 at HICC, Novotel, Hyderabad was a dazzling affair with the crème-de-la-crème of cinema consisting of luminaries from all the four south Indian film industries. Besides the awards ceremony, the event also had performances, entertainment and a fashion show by stars in true blue south film style.

Southscope took on the daunting task of short listing films from all south Indian languages – Telugu, Tamil, Kannada & Malayalam - that have stood neck above the rest with their signature style in 2007 - 2008. From them, the winners were chosen by audience’s poll and the jury’s votes.

The award categories were:

• Stylish Actor - Male – 4 languages
Female – 4 languages

• Stylish Album – 4 languages
• Stylish Fight Choreography – 4 languages
• Stylish Song Choreography – 4 languages
• Southscope Youth Style Icon - Male
• Southscope Youth Style Icon - Female


The Scintillating Performances: Apart from the award presentation, the event also included performances by Nikhita, Jennifer Kotwal, Mumaith Khan, Devi Sri Prasad and Priyamani.

A Fashion Show by the stars : Three fashion sequences were also interspersed with the award presentation. The first sequence was put together by Asif Merchant, that depicted the black and white era of southern cinema. This was followed by the retro theme sequence designed by Ashwin Mawle and the third captured the essence of contemporary style in southern cinema, put together by Ashwin Mawle again and a group of other designers.

In the last segement of the fashion show, the Ram Charan walked the ramp, the first time any telugu star did that. Soon, his cousin Allu Arjun walked the ramp along with Shruti Haasan, representing the new breed of South Indian cinema.

Allu Arjun’s tribute to Micheal Jackson : Usually male stars in the South do not perform on stage. But, Allu Arjun once again swam against the tide breaking age-old traditions and danced to a medley of Micheal Jackson’s popular tunes.

The crowd was in awe of his performance. Arjun recollected that his studio where he practices dance, has poster of three people who are his idols – Micheal Jackson, Chiranjeevi and Prabhudeva. And Prabhudeva who was in the audience, was moved and came on stage on Arjun’s request and performed the moon-walk, MJ’s trademark step along with him. The host for the evening Ganesh Venkatraman aptly summed it up that it was a rare moment to see both the Micheal Jacksons of India performing together on stage.

A large number of stars from all four industries attended the event including Chiranjeevi, Venkatesh, Prabhu Deva, Nayanthara, Shriya Saran, Dhanush, Lakshmi Rai, Sharmila Mandre, Shraddha Das and many more. Bollywood actor and a style icon of yesteryears, Zeenat Aman was present too apart from former cricketer, Mohommad Azharuddin.

The Southscope Style (SSS) award is being established to celebrate the sartorial splendor of south Indian cinema. Style in the south cinema parlance has always been unique, distinct, inimitable and unparalleled in any part of the globe

About Southscope:

Southscope is a pan-Indian monthly film magazine being promoted by Geetha Arts, a reputed production house in Hyderabad, which amongst other landmark films has produced Telugu and Hindi versions of the blockbuster Ghajini & Magadheera recently. Although the focus of Southscope is on south Indian cinema primarily, the magazine has considerable space dedicated to Bollywood, Hollywood, regional cinema from other states and world cinema.

We aspire to cater to the niche of an English-language south Indian film magazine. The idea is to glamorize south Indian cinema, while also appeal to a larger audience not only confined to the southern movie lover, industry personnel- stars, makers etc. but also to those who are generally interested in cinema, across India and the globe. Southscope will be marketed aggressively internationally too, since there is a huge Diaspora of Indians abroad.
