Hyderabad, August 19th, 2017: Facts Foundation, India in partnership with the Cardiovascular Research Foundation (CRF), USA is hosting India’s premier Interventional experience – ACVS (Advanced Cardiovascular Solutions) INDIA 2017 at HICC, Hyderabad from August 17th to 20th, 2017. Dr A Sreenivas Kumar, Founder Director, FACTS Foundation; Chairman, Cardiovascular Sciences & Chief Cardiologist,Citizens Hospital; Dr Susheel K. Kodali, Organising Course Director, ACVS India 2017 & Director, Structural Heart & Valve Center, Columbia University Medical Center and Dr Rahul Potluri, Founder of ACALM & Cardiologist, Aston Medical School, UK, briefing media at a press conference said over 1500 delegates from India and abroad and more than 200 faculty are attending this landmark conference.
Dr Srinivas Kumar said, the Conference had live demo of complex, new procedures and technologies, transmitted from local, national and international sites. The talented physicians at these sites demonstrated basic and advanced techniques for coronary, peripheral and structural intervention. Diseases which hitherto didn't have treatment and diseases which needed surgery to treat, were the focus of the conference. The newer techniques to treat these through percutaneous treatment was deliberated and demonstrated. Heart disease can be prevented in 80% of our patients, if they follow healthy lifestyles with regular exercise, healthy diet habits, by controlling BP, cholesterol, diabetes etc. Today only one 1% of our population is following preventive aspects, but urgently need to have at least 50% of our population adopting precautionary measures to bring down the disease burden.
Dr Rahul Potluri said, through ACALM we have been focussing on Big data and are the first group to do that. Data collection is a routine process in most hospitals, there is no serious in the collection. But with an algorithm, this data is being used for research. Studies from the data collected show the link between breast cancer and cholesterol levels, reducing cholesterol with statins can bring down the risk of breast cancer. Another study on marital status and heart disease indicates, married people have 14% reduced risk of heart attack than those who are single or divorced. Big data studies will be exciting in India, as little exploring of data has been done till now, though individual hospitals collect data. The data from UK indicates that the Indian population there has 20% greater chronic total occlusion of heart blood vessels than the locals and much younger patients are afflicted of the disease. Amongst Indians there is 30% higher chance of diabetes than the Caucasian population. We have double the rate of incidence of heart attacks in the 40 to 60 years age group as against the Caucasian population. In the West we see 70 year old patients coming with heart attack but in India we are increasingly seeing 30 to 40 year old patients, and that is dangerous as it afflicts in their prime age. The reasons being rapid adoption to Western habits, in addition to our known predisposition to heart disease. In near future we will collate the data from individual hospitals here and analyse it, which can come with interesting revelations we didn't have access to, till now. All the current studies are on Caucasian population, the data collected from our patients will reveal how different are our patients and their diseases. With this data we can find out lot more about Indian patients and that enables us to treat them more appropriately. Today, how we treat Indian patients is based on the data collected abroad from Caucasian population. With data of our own patients we can administer the right therapy to the right patients. The current drugs from Europe and US may not work that well here on patients. To do all this we need to have infrastructure to analyse the disease pattern here and what treatment best suits it, this helps to understand the problem and treat effectively. Currently In India it is Treat policy rather than prevent policy, unlike in the Western countries. The society as a whole has to address the issues of health here, through a collaborative effort. If we continue like this without corrective measures, the heart disease burden will reach uncontrollable proportions.
Dr Susheel K. Kodali said, the purpose of this conference is to increase learning and increase the opportunities of understanding, the learning is both ways. We have also deliberated about advanced devices being used in the West and not yet available in India for improving heart pumping for patients of heart failure and those with weak pumping of heart. Taking the discussions had here, a step further Columbia University Medical Center is conducting research on pregnant women having rheumatic heart disease with narrowing valve, coming to Gandhi, Osmania and Citizen's Hospital. These women will be offered free treatment, two women have already been treated by clearing the valve with balloon.
The highlight of this conference is the 3600 live streaming of surgeries to a medical conference for the first time in the world on Asia's biggest screen. Advanced and rare interventional procedures in 360 video format is being live streamed directly to the conference at HICC from Apollo, KIMS and Citizen, Hyderabad. This method of video streaming will be the future as virtual reality headsets and technology become more proliferated.
