Rana Daggubati launches Alexander Hair & Beauty Lounge

"I want the Alexander haircut", was the chant in Hyderabad when the reigning matinee idol was Amitabh Bachchan. With a step cut, almost like a toupee flopping over the ears, parted in the middle and with a bouffant on the either side. If you had it on, you were in! This is not surprising, since the saloon owner Balaprasad had trained under Hakim, the personal hair dresser of Amitabh Bachchan.
In the 70's, with a 30 year old Balaprasad's sudden demise, the mantle fell over the shoulders of Sharada Bai. She had no choice but to learn the tricks and nitty-gritties of the trade to support her tiny tots, four sons and a daughter. She strongly rose to the helm and sat there, listening to all the snip-snips around, till her health failed her in late 90's. The memories of the halcyon days stay intact on how, Balaprasad and Sharada took over the debt-ridden family business in 1965, after which she coaxed her husband to start a section exclusively for ladies. Sadhna cut was in the rage that time, a lock of hair pulled down to the middle of the forehead carelessly, we reminisce.

When the ladies didn't look beyond Sadhna, the menfolk had their eyes on lots and lots of hair with many a hippy aspirants fine-tuning their hair under the watchful eyes of Balaprasad. Alexander served a wide range of clientele ranging from the NTR family, the Nawab family, to the film stars like Rajnikant, Murali Mohan and Raju Babu. Raj Kapoor knew the couple, used to drop in whenever he was in Hyderabad.

Vijayakant, the youngest in the business and one of the popular hairstylists with the clients, is confident of fulfilling his father's dream and in becoming the next Alexander in his profession.

He holds some well-deserved compliments for the hairstyle of some Film stars of today.
