This program which coincides with World Diabetes Day on November 14, 2012 was formally inaugurated by cine star Dr. Srihari and Mr. S. Aleem Basha, Zonal Commissioner, (WZ), GHMC, was the guest of honour on the occasion.
The Awareness program has interactive sessions including talks by leading diabetologists of the city on diabetes and its complications, diet and physiotherapy counselling etc. The expert talks will encompass topics associated with diabetes like obesity, retinopathy, eye-care, dental care and diabetes and pregnancy. The Clinic will also extend free specialist consultation for Diabetes, Dental, Gynaecology, Paediatrics & Orthopaedics, besides free diet, physiotherapy and exercise counselling for the visitors during the duration of the event. The Exhibition will have multiple awareness stalls on different diabetic complications.
Speaking on the occasion Dr. Sanjoy Paul, Diabetologist at The Apollo Clinic, Jubilee Hills, said, Hyderabad has already earned the ignominy of being called the diabetic capital of India, but the matter of grave concern is the rapid rise in the number of young type-2 diabetics in the city. India itself is seeing a 33% year on year increase in Type-2 diabetics. It's vital to create awareness that Diabetes is not a disease, but a disorder and can be controlled by proper life-style management, he opined. "Knowledge with empowerment is the focal vision in reducing the risk of developing complications and making life sustainable for a patient afflicted with diabetes", said Dr. S.G. Moazam, Clinical Head — Sugar, The Apollo Clinic.
According to Mr. Sudhir Diggikar, CEO, The Apollo Clinic, the theme for this year's World diabetes day is 'Diabetes Education and Prevention.' The Apollo Clinics has initiated SUGAR to combat diabetes and intends to be in the forefront by reaching out to the citizens, especially the youth through Awareness campaigns. The junk food habits coupled with the stressful lives afflicting our youth today is the real culprit and education alone can make them modify their lifestyles. This program, we are confident will impact positively all those who visit the clinic during the four days, Mr. Diggikar added.
