It is known that Jio Hotstar streams the content of HBO, Hulu, Peacock and other international platforms as well. Most of the foreign-origin content being streamed on Jio Hotstar has been heavily censored right from the start. And a section of the Indian customer base is unhappy with the decision.
"Jio Hotstar is censoring HBO content. Better to pretend like there is no official way to watch HBO in India and act accordingly," an angry movie buff wrote on social media. "The spineless, regressive bigots at Jio Hotstar are censoring White Lotus. Never renewing my subscription with these bunch of swindlers," another social media user wrote.
As per a social media user, even Indian content is being censored. "They have censored Indian movies as well. Very recent example I saw was Masaan. They cut out fully the first hotel scene which is crucial to the plot," a viewer ranted. "Censorship and blurring content in India, especially 18+ content and other content, will affect cinema in such a way that people will do piracy again and OTT subscriptions will also get down too," a user analyzed.
With the recent India's Got Latent controversy and the calls for censorship getting amplified, the government could force OTT platforms to double down.
