In a move aimed at making cinema "more accessible", the Karnataka government, earlier this month, implemented a fixed upper limit of Rs 200 for all movie tickets throughout the state. Even multiplexes and not just single screens must abide by the rule.
Bollywood superstar Salman Khan now wants the Karnataka model to be adopted across the country. The actor, whose Sikandar will head to theatres on March 30th, wants the governments to go a step further and regulate the prices of Foods and Beverages as well.
Ticket rates are sky-high in key markets like Mumbai. Reducing admission rates is expected to increase admissions, saving Bollywood from drowning out completely.
Salman Khan's statement comes in the wake of many big-ticket Hindi films flopping miserably in recent years. Commentators have stated that Bollywood is on a death bed.
But not everyone sees high ticket and popcorn prices as the culprit. Recently, Aamir Khan spoke out against the deepening OTT culture, saying that streaming platforms are the reason why the commercial viability of Bollywood movies has gone from bad to worse.
