RGV: Telugu Tier-2 Heroes Burning Credibility Chasing Tier-1 Dreams

A view has been held that Tier-2 heroes must predominantly do content movies instead of routine formulaic stuff. But most Tier-2 Telugu movies have been trying to break into the Tier-1 segment.

In a recent interview, Ram Gopal Varma criticized this tendency among Telugu actors to go big. "Their market range hovers around Rs 10 Cr. But they act in movies made on a budget of Rs 50 Cr. With Rs 40 Cr losses also goes their credibility. In Mollywood, that's not the case. They do content movies," RGV said.

RGV added that medium-range actors don't have a fan base of their own but they don't accept reality. In an attempt to imitate big stars like Prabhas and Mahesh Babu, these actors desperately act in big-budget movies and burn their hands, Varma stated.

Tier-2 heroes don't deserve the whole blame, though. Tier-2 directors deserve more blame in Telugu cinema. These directors are creatively bankrupt after their first movies. They try to become star directors by mounting big-scale movies; they have no creativity but they don't realize it. In the end, they cause irreparable damage to themselves and Tier-2 guys.
