Expect risky action from me in Kingston: Divyabharathi

GV Prakash Kumar's Kingston is touted to be India's first-ever sea-based fantasy adventure thriller. Produced by Parallel Universe Pictures and Zee Studios, the movie has Divyabharathi as the female lead. The model-turned-actress previously shot to fame with Bachelor in 2021. After winning titles such as Miss Ethnic Face of Madras, Princess of Coimbatore 2016, and Popular New Face Model, she went on to test her luck in the cinema industry. Kingston, to be released in theatres on March 7th in Telugu and Tamil, is her biggest opportunity to become popular in Telugu as well. In this interview, Divyabharathi talks about her role in the movie and more.

Last year, I played a cameo in Vijay Sethupathi's Maharaja. Even though it was a small appearance, it gave me satisfaction. Bachelor became popular among the Telugu audience in 2021. My character received a lot of appreciation in Tamil, and I am glad to see the same love from the Telugu audience.

Kingston is so unlike Bachelor in terms of scale and genre. Besides its larger-than-life action, it is also a first-of-its-kind genre for our cinema. In Bachelor, I played the role of a city girl, but in Kingston, I take on the character of a village girl. The village is a close-knit community of fishermen who depend on the sea for their livelihood. But suddenly, they stop fishing—why? What mysterious curse has befallen them? And how do the hero and heroine come together to unravel this enigma? You will have to watch the film to discover the answers! I play the hero’s love interest, and as he strives to save the village, the heroine stands firmly by his side. What drives her to join him on this perilous journey into the sea? That’s the heart of Kingston, a story of courage, mystery, and unwavering support.

This is my second film with actor-composer GV Prakash Kumar. Kingston marks his debut as a producer. When I was initially offered the role, he was the sole producer, and later, Zee Studios came on board. He put in a lot of hard work for this film, and I am really happy to be a part of it.

While I have mostly played non-action roles in my career, Kingston is different. I participated in risky stunts under the aegis of action director Dhileep Subbarayan. It took some preparation on my part to do so. The whole experience of shooting was thrilling. I even did sequences involving ropes. Action scenes can be really tough. This is the most challenging project I can conceive of for myself.

My assistant is a Telugu speaker, so I practice speaking with him regularly. That’s how I am learning the language!

I have completed two films in Tamil. In Telugu, I am currently in discussions for two projects. I have acted in a Telugu film titled GOAT, starring Sudigali Sudheer, which is all set for release.
