Hyderabad Remains Tollywood's Stronghold: AP Development Faces Long Odds

Recently, the Telugu Film Producers Council forwarded proposals on the development of the Telugu film industry in Andhra Pradesh. The industry expects friendly measures for the construction of studios and establishment of infrastructure in Vizag, Tirupati, and Rajahmundry, as well as the allocation of land for housing for producers, artists, directors, and technicians.

This week, the AP government has slapped a notice on the Ramanaidu Studios in Vizag. The private studio, promoted by D Suresh Babu, was allotted 34 acres of land towards the construction of a studio more than two decades ago. Since the purpose hasn't been fulfilled, the government has asked the promoter to return the allotted land.

If a big player like Ramanaidu Studios hasn't been able to develop a studio despite its vast resources and rich experience, others tasting success is remote. From time to time, industry representatives and players make noise about the potential of Tollywood to find its feet in Andhra Pradesh. But the fact remains that it has been nearly impossible for the industry to develop an ecosystem beyond Hyderabad. For the foreseeable future, AP won't see even decent development. Tollywood's adda is going to be Hyderabad and Hyderabad alone for the next few decades even if no crisis hits the industry.
