Tollywood's Blind Spot: Ignoring Bollywood's Artistic Prowess

Naga Vamsi's comments about Bollywood losing sleep over the unbelievable success of Pushpa 2 have to be seen as an insult. The producer of films like Tillu Square and Bheemla Nayak has indirectly said that the Mumbai film industry must be seething with jealousy. Maybe, he is right.

But there can be a counter-view. Bollywoodians wouldn't be petty about an outsider making it big in Hindi. This is borne out by the fact that many of them have tried to analyze the success of Telugu actioners in Hindi in a dispassionate manner instead of dismissing the appeal of movies like Pushpa, Salaar and RRR. Bollywood has tried to platform Vijay Deverakonda and take him to the next level. It is working with Jr NTR (War 2). If given a chance, it would embrace Allu Arjun and Ram Charan. It has long tried to enroll a reluctant Mahesh Babu.

On the other hand, no Telugu filmmaker ever praises a single new-wave Bollywood movie. Some Hindi films are out of the world. Just because they are not celebrated by the Telugu audience, doesn't mean our filmmakers must keep mum about them. Many multiplex Bollywood movies are exceptionally written. They don't feature superstars like SRK and Salman Khan, which is why they don't enjoy visibility down south. Telugu filmmakers would do themselves a favour if they learned from the movies made by Shoojit Sircar, Dibakar Banerjee, Anurag Kashyap, Vishal Bhardwaj, Amar Kaushik, Shakun Batra, and Zoya Akhtar.
