The Indian film industry has long been accustomed to the traditional formula of releasing big-budget films on festive holidays to maximize box office collections. However, a new trend is emerging, challenging the conventional wisdom, notes trade analyst Taran Adarsh.
Rajamouli's 'Baahubali 2', Sandeep Vanga-Ranbir Kapoor's 'Animal', and Sukumar-Allu Arjun's 'Pushpa 2' have shattered BO records on non-holiday releases.
'Pushpa 2', to be released on December 5, is set to continue a trend solidified by the movies of Prabhas and Ranbir. Going by the pre-sales in India, it is poised to break records and set new benchmarks for non-holiday releases. In just 26 hours of opening the bookings, the Allu Arjun movie sold one lakh tickets in the three national chains (PVR, INOX, and Cinepolis).
Backed by strong marketing and audience anticipation, it is possible to deliver outstanding results regardless of the release date. "Filmmakers, actors, distributors, and studios are now realizing that relying solely on festivals or holidays is no longer a guaranteed path to box office success," says Adarsh.
