SS Rajamouli is currently in Japan to promote the documentary RRR: Behind and Beyond. The less-known documentary was released in cinemas yesterday.
Rajamouli has previously promoted Baahubali 2 and RRR passionately in Japan. But promoting a documentary in that country is way surprising. It is not like documentaries have a mass appeal in Japan. Streaming platforms like Netflix have boosted visibility for documentaries, with titles like Age of Samurai: Battle for Japan attracting viewers, but theatrical hits remain outliers. Documentaries generally need a unique hook or cultural tie-in to break through commercially in Japan’s crowded entertainment market.
Yet, if Rajamouli has deemed it fit to fly all the way to Japan to promote the documentary on RRR, it implies that he has cultivated strong ties there. Recently, Jr NTR was in Japan to promote the Japanese release of Devara.
Rajamouli is currently filming Superstar Mahesh Babu's movie, which co-stars Priyanka Chopra and Prithviraj Sukumaran.
