On Tuesday evening, after the first look of Thalapathy Vijay's 'Vaarasudu' ('Vaarisu' in Tamil) was released, something unexpected happened. #Maharshi2 started trending on Twitter.
It is not difficult to understand why. The first look poster suggests that Vijay is playing a suave businessman or something similar in the movie, much like Mahesh Babu in 'Maharshi'. Both 'Vaarasudu' and 'Maharshi' are directed by Vamsi Paidipally. Netizens believe that Paidipally has written Vijay's characterization to bear striking resemblances to Mahesh's character in his 2019 movie.
Still others are of the view that 'Vaarasudu' could have similarities with 'Attarintiki Daredi' more than 'Maharshi', considering the title and Vijay's purported character in the movie.
'Maharshi' was a coming-of-age journey of its central character. 'Vaarasudu' seems to be that at one level. In today's poster released by Dil Raju's production house, we see Vijay travelling with underprivileged kids in a jolly mood. Is an element of grand philanthropy/social change be present in 'Vaarasudu'? We have to wait and watch.
Meanwhile, Mahesh Babu's fans are expressing their anger over #Maharshi2 trending in a mocking way. They are reminding trolls that 'Maharshi' won a National Award.
