Celebs and mini-celebs falling prey to cyber fraud is nothing new. In the latest instance, actress Anjali Patil of 'Kaala' (Tamil) and 'Newton' (Hindi) fame has been victimized by a cyber fraudster. As per reports, she has been duped money to the tune of Rs 5.79 lakh.
The fraudster contacted her by phone, posing as a member of the Mumbai police department. He asserted that narcotics had been discovered in a package headed to Taiwan and insisted on the immediate transfer of a certain specified sum.
The fraudster successfully stole the actress's identity, convincing her that she was unwittingly involved in a money laundering scheme. To sidestep potential legal issues, she complied with the demands and deposited the requested amount. It was only later, upon receiving advice from an acquaintance, that she realized the deception and hurriedly reported the incident to the local Mumbai police.
