KS Chithra is known across languages. The popular playback singer has recorded thousands of songs in her career spanning decades.
In a recent statement, Chithra appealed to Hindus to chant Lord Rama's mantras during the consecration of the Ayodhya Ram Mandir on January 22. Since the Ram Temple issue has been politicized by different political parties, Chithra's views have been seen by Marxists and other ideologically anti-BJP parties in Kerala as communal. The singer, who is 60, has been subjected to trolling on social media.
In this regard, the BJP has come to her defence. "Things are such that a Hindu can't freely share her beliefs with fellow followers. It is shameful that the Congress party is silent on this issue. BJP stands in unwavering support of the singer," wrote K Surendran, the chief of the Kerala state unit of BJP. The singer is apolitical and is unlikely to comment on the controversy spawned by her religious appeal.
