'Matka' Teaser: 'KGF' aspiration and 'Kabzaa' delivery

'Matka', starring Varun Tej in the role of a gangster who comes from a socially and economically backward background, has a pronounced 'KGF'-like aspiration written all over its face. Expectations and aspirations are different from harsh realities, though. 'Matka' comes close to being a slightly superior version of Upendra's frustrating period action drama 'Kabzaa', which too looked like a cheap imitation of Prashanth Neel's trendsetting duology.

Karuna Kumar, both writer and director, situates 'Matka' in Vizag, where Vasu, a local aspiring legend, dreams of becoming synonymous with the city. The film's style leans heavily on clichés, with Vasu frequently seen smoking and sporting retro attire.

Meenakshi Chowdary and Nora Fatehi, one hopes, are not mere props. Naveen Chandra will be seen in a major role.

The film, whose music is by GV Prakash Kumar, will head to theatres on Novembre 14. It will clash with Suriya's 'Kanguva' in Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, Malayalam, and Kannada.
